How to be a patient: Martin Luther King Family Health Center accepts new patients. It is appreciated if you call in advance for an appointment. The Medical Center welcomes most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, Women’s Health Connection and Nevada Check-Up. A sliding fee schedule for low-income patients who do not have insurance is available. Identification and income information is needed to enroll in the sliding fee program.
Appointments are strongly recommended; some sites do see walk-ins for emergency needs. Call the medical center to check on walk-in availability.
Prescription Refills: Ask your pharmacist to fax your request for prescription refills to the doctor; this will speed up your refill process.
Additional Information: Located off of Martin Luther King Boulevard, the Health Center opened its doors in 2000. Martin Luther King Family Health Center has made medical care available to more than 3,300 people and is having a positive impact on the health of the local community.
Douglas Budde, Jr., MD, is a board certified Family Practice physician. He received his medical degree from American University of the Caribbean, St. Maarten. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, MI.
Darren Rahaman, MD, is a board certified Family Practice physician and has been with Nevada Health Centers since 2000. In 2009, he became the Chief Medical Officer. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California, School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) Family Medicine Residency Program in Las Vegas. He enjoys boating, playing basketball, and scuba diving.
Adriene Rivera, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner/Family Nurse Practitioner degree from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. She also graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Summa cum Laude from Stony Brook University in Long Island, NY.
Kristin Tracy, MSPAS, MPH, PA-C, is a member of the Nevada Academy of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants and Physician Assistants for Global Health. She has a Master’s Degree in Public Health and is fluent in Spanish having lived in Spain for one year and Mexico for six months. She has particular interest in global health, international medicine and medical missions. She enjoys healthcare because of the opportunity it provides to meet new people, make an impact on patient’s lives and her community, the diversity in patients and their medical issues. In her free time she enjoys stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, traveling, tennis, reading, photography and yoga.
Ashley Bechtol, MD, is a board certified pediatrician who was a National Institute of Health fellowship recipient during her undergraduate studies, researcher of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at Stanford University with poster presentation during medical school, published multiple journal articles during residency and received the Ruben P. Diaz Award. She received her medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, where she also completed her pediatric internship and residency training. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Bechtol has volunteered at various clinics and fairs around Nevada to provide aid to children in need. She went on a medical mission in Nicaragua and fell in love with community medicine. Her passion for aiding those in greatest need further fueled her love for pediatric medicine. She is extremely compassionate about making medical treatment available to every child and providing education for the families.
Amy Christensen, MD, earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is board certified in pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has spent the past 19 years working in the Phoenix, Arizona area. During that time, she worked as a pediatrician in private practice and most recently at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Department of Ambulatory Pediatrics, Homeless Youth Outreach serving homeless and at-risk children/youth while also teaching residents and medical students.
Carla Schaefer, MD, is a board certified pediatrician. Dr. Schaefer received her medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, where she also completed her pediatric internship and residency training. Dr. Schaefer speaks Spanish and has a passion to help children. You can count on her to provide compassionate care to your child.
Claricia Shepherd, MD, is board certified pediatrician. Dr. Shepherd received her medical degree from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. She completed her Pediatric internship and residency at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. She speaks Medical Spanish and enjoys spectator sports, movies, and reading.
Women’s Healthcare Services
Lisa Gartin, CNM, is a board certified midwife and registered nurse with 22 years of Maternal-child experience. She has also been a certified Lactation Consultant and certified Lamaze Instructor for more than a decade.
Sandra Abdullah, Clinical Director of Behavioral Health, has more than 30 years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). She developed and implemented the process for the integration of behavioral health into the NVHC primary care treatment environment which includes Family Practice, Pediatrics, and Dentistry. She oversees the day-to-day operations of behavioral health services and serves as a behavioral health practitioner. She has a Masters of Social Work degree (MSW) from George Williams College and currently serves on the UNLV Advisory Board for Behavioral Health Integration.
Nevada Health Centers (NVHC), a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) commonly called a Community Health Center (CHC) program that is partially funded under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act.
