How to be a patient: Martin Luther King Family Health Center accepts new patients. It is appreciated if you call in advance for an appointment. The Medical Center welcomes most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, Women’s Health Connection and Nevada Check-Up. A sliding fee schedule for low-income patients who do not have insurance is available. Identification and income information is needed to enroll in the sliding fee program.
Appointments are strongly recommended; some sites do see walk-ins for emergency needs. Call the medical center to check on walk-in availability.
Prescription Refills: Ask your pharmacist to fax your request for prescription refills to the doctor; this will speed up your refill process.
Additional Information: Located off of Martin Luther King Boulevard, the Health Center opened its doors in 2000. Martin Luther King Family Health Center has made medical care available to more than 3,300 people and is having a positive impact on the health of the local community.
Darren Rahaman, MD, is a board certified Family Practice physician and has been with Nevada Health Centers since 2000. In 2009, he became the Chief Medical Officer. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California, School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) Family Medicine Residency Program in Las Vegas. He enjoys boating, playing basketball, and scuba diving.
Douglas Budde, Jr., MD, is a board certified Family Practice physician. He received his medical degree from American University of the Caribbean, St. Maarten. He completed his Family Practice Residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, MI.
Bernadette Yalung-Almodiel, PA, works at Nevada Health Centers because it gives quality service to all – young and old. She has a passion for the underserved, senior citizens, victims of human trafficking, medical mission work and advocacy for laborers. Outside of work her hobbies include watching concerts, going to theatres, reading, exercising for health, and volunteer work.
Benjamin Tanner, PA, works at Nevada Health Centers because he wants to help take care of under-served populations and develop greater skill in that area. He lived in Guatemala for two years and became fluent in Spanish. He enjoys taking care of Spanish-speaking patients and utilizing those language skills. Outside of work, he enjoys playing the guitar and piano, singing, traveling abroad (especially in Latin America), cooking and exercising. He’s a member of the American Academy of Physicians.
Carla Schaefer, MD, is a board certified pediatrician. Dr. Schaefer received her medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, where she also completed her pediatric internship and residency training. Dr. Schaefer speaks Spanish and has a passion to help children. You can count on her to provide compassionate care to your child.
Claricia Shepherd, MD, is board certified pediatrician. Dr. Shepherd received her medical degree from Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. She completed her Pediatric internship and residency at the University of Nevada, School of Medicine. She speaks Medical Spanish and enjoys spectator sports, movies, and reading.
Ashley Bechtol, MD, was a National Institute of Health fellowship recipient during her undergraduate studies, researcher of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at Stanford University with poster presentation during medical school, published multiple journal articles during residency and received the Ruben P. Diaz Award. She received her medical degree from the University of Nevada, School of Medicine, where she also completed her pediatric internship and residency training. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Bechtol has volunteered at various clinics and fairs around Nevada to provide aid to children in need. She went on a medical mission in Nicaragua and fell in love with community medicine. Her passion for aiding those in greatest need further fueled her love for pediatric medicine. She is extremely compassionate about making medical treatment available to every child and providing education for the families.
Rueben Adegoke, MD, is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. He received his medical degree from Howard College of Medicine. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Synergy Medical Education Alliance. He enjoys soccer, weightlifting, running, tennis, and music.
Peter Beale, MD
Jose R. Duncan, MD, is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Dr. Duncan received his medical degree from Autonomous University of Central America in San Jose, Costa Rica. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Donald L. Roberts, MD, is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. He received his medical degree from University of Nevada, School of Medicine. He completed a fellowship at the University of California, San Diego in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He is native to Las Vegas. He enjoys running and auto racing.
James Verrees, MD, is a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Dr. Verrees initially enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate, attended the Naval Academy Prep School, and the Naval Academy where he majored in chemistry. Dr. Verrees received his Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) located in Bethesda, Maryland in 1995. While at Bethesda, Dr. Verrees volunteered as a research assistant at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI). Thereafter he served in Korea and then worked with the Fleet Marine Force in a General Practice capacity. Dr. Verrees received his OB/GYN training at Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California. As an OB/GYN, Dr. Verrees worked in busy military hospitals as well as remotely located hospitals. Most recently, Dr. Verrees joined Nevada Health Centers on May 18, 2015 after working in Elko, Nevada for 18 months. His interests are improving population health.

Bradley Walker, MD, is a board-certified Public Health Physician. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami, School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Brigham Young University with an emphasis in Preventive Medicine. He is fluent in Spanish and president of a humanitarian foundation for malnourished children. He has 6 grown children and a wonderful wife.
